Bollywood power couple Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor recently announced that they are expecting their first child via social media. While the news received a lot of love from many, there were several jokes and memes too questioning them in getting pregnant in less than three months of their wedding. Speculation about Alia’s conception before marriage in a way shows how modern or progressive we say the times are, there is this still conservative thinking prevalent when it comes to pre-marital sex or pre-marital pregnancy. Somy Ali sounds upset talking about how a piece of happy news can be marred by so much negativity. The actor-turned-humanitarian puts forth her viewpoint on the same.
“I don’t even know how to dignify this with an answer given the respect and warm wishes I have for the couple. Chintoo ji (Late Rishi Kapoor’s nickname) and [Mahesh] Bhatt saab are two people I have always had immense respect for, not just for their intellect, but also for their unbelievable work,” she says.
Somy then questions the thought process of those targeting the couple. “What is wrong with people? The hypocrisy in South Asia literally blows my mind on a daily basis. ‘You know she is barren’. ‘You know they have been married for so and so years and she hasn’t given birth’. Give me a break on the inane mindset of people and then top it all with jokes about it online with memes etc. My heartiest congratulations to both Alia and Ranbir for their bundle of joy coming their way… If anyone has the audacity to say anything negative about this, you are simply unwell and need psychological help, which let me clarify is a good thing. Sane or not sane, a little therapy does all of us a whole lot of good. So book your appointment as soon as possible, you ridiculous critics hiding behind screens. Seek Help,” she sounds angry.
At a time when we are rooting for women empowerment, Somy feels such backward thought-process and certain notions impact women in their day to day lives.
“My answer here is inevitable and has to interweaved with the recent overturn of Roe (she refers to the new US law that removed the constitutional right of American women to abort). It is our body, and. So, leave these young adults to look forward to a life of happiness and exhilaration and dear trolls, please mind our own business,” she adds.
Somy highlights that it’s time people concentrate on larger issues and work on them rather than poking their noses at others’ lives. And, they should also learn to be happy for others.
“It’s my life and I will live it how I want to. Once again, congratulations to the beautiful couple and their child to come. Also, for the love of God/South Asia needs to catch up with 2022, you are so much behind it makes me want to regurgitate. Grow up. Sex is natural, sex is why we are all here,” she continues, “Party on Alia. She is one of my favourite actresses of this generation. She killed it in Gangubai. No one can come close to that performance. Happy Baby, baby (she smiles).”
