While pay inequality has been a long-standing issue for female actors in the film industry, the latest person to speak out on this is Bhumi Pednekar. The ‘Badhai Do’ star vociferously speaks out about how during the pandemic, female actors were asked to take pay cuts.
She said, “I feel like most people realised that the pandemic had hit them only when they had a female-led film that they were supporting. I have never heard of any producer going and telling a male co-star of mine, ‘Yaar, Covid ki wajah se aap pay cut le lo.”
Female actors have often spoken about this great imbalance of women’s pay. We’ve seen Deepika Padukone speak out about it rather vociferously, and of course, she was heard. For both in Padmavaat and ‘83’, Deepika was paid higher than her male co-stars. However, that’s not the case with many female actors. So we agree with Bhumi, it’s high time female actors get their dues and the pay packet would be a good start. Hats off to Bhumi!
